Deck Railing Repair

Post connections work loose. A railing post bolted to the deck's rim joist levers against its bolts every time someone leans on it. Wood shrinks over dry summers, bolts lose their bite, and the post starts to rock. Fix: retighten into sound wood, upsize the hardware, or add blocking behind the rim joist so the bolts clamp something solid.

Rot at the post base. Railing posts collect water where they meet the deck surface — the same end-grain trap as everywhere else in outdoor wood. A post soft at the base needs replacement, not tightening.

Balusters and top rails age out. Individual balusters loosen or crack, top rails check and splinter where hands run along them. Both replace cleanly without touching the posts.

The rim joist itself is soft. The hidden version: the post and bolts are fine, but the wood they clamp to is going. The railing feels loose no matter how much anyone tightens it. This is a frame repair, and finding it early is the difference between replacing one joist section and rebuilding the deck edge.

The working standard for a guardrail is that it takes a strong sideways push at the top without measurable movement. If your railing visibly flexes when leaned on, it needs attention — not because an inspector will notice, but because the day it matters, it has to hold.

That is the field test. The written one is three figures — a guard is required above a 30-inch drop, it stands 42 inches, and it passes no 4-inch sphere — and they are set out with their code sections on the railing repair page. A deck being repaired in kind is measured against the deck that is there; those figures are what a rebuilt run has to meet.
