Deck Board Replacement

Splintering and surface cracks — normal UV aging of the top face; boards are often still structurally fine, and the call between sanding/refinishing and replacement is about how deep the damage goes. Cupping — boards curl upward at the edges when the top face dries faster than the bottom; mild cupping is cosmetic, severe cupping holds puddles and accelerates everything else. Rot at fasteners and butt joints — end grain and screw holes are where water enters; a board soft at the joints is done. Bounce or flex under one board — stop: that's usually the joist below, not the board, and a new board over a rotted joist wastes both.

Before boards are ordered, what they sit on gets checked. Replacing boards is the moment of cheapest access to the joists — the deck is open anyway. Like-for-like redwood keeps the look and the cost predictable; grooved or plugged fastening hides the screws if the original deck did. Mixing in composite boards on a wood frame is possible but shows — most partial replacements stay with the original material and let a season of weather plus a coat of stain blend the new in.
